CANTAMATHS

Last Wednesday evening the Springston Cantamath team went to compete against dozens of other schools at Horncastle Arena (né CBS Arena). 
Alice Kirsopp, Georgia Gwatkin, Callum Vallance and Molly Barker were selected from a strong squad. It was a David vs Goliath battle. Many of the bigger schools had been training intensively all year. 
For Springston, a goal of 30 points was chosen, (at 5 points per correct answer across 20 questions). The Springston team powered beyond that goal to an excellent 45 points! 
The team was stoked and so were the supporters. 

Here's one of the questions they faced, see if you can get the answer right: There is a running competition. The total prize-pool is $1,500. First place gets $250 more than second place. Second place gets $250 more than third. How much money does third place receive?

Sports Gear

Lucy and Mya did a geat job of going around and collecting the sports gear at the end of the day. They were very concerned about all the equipment left out so we will look at how we can improve this. If we leave all this out it will go missing and then we will have nothing to play with at break times.

Tekapo Camp

The Year 7s had been looking forward to the Tekapo Camp and it definitely didn’t disappoint.

We headed down on Wednesday 20 August and were greeted by lovely sunny weather. We didn’t have long to get comfortable in our cabins, on the edge of Lake Tekapo, before we had to walk down to the ice rink. We enjoyed the challenge of ice skating and some of us came away with some bruises.

The next day we were able to go skiing / snowboarding up at Roundhill. We started with our lessons and then later in the day we could go up the T-bar. After a day at the ski field there was nothing better than going to the hot pools for a soak that night.

Our final day consisted of mountain biking in the morning and then snow tubing in the afternoon.

We returned home sore and tired but satisfied with our camp.

CHRISTCHURCH TRIP

On the 6 of aghast we went to the centre of Christchurch to see how the earthquake had effected the Christchurch centre and the people in it. We saw lots of sad stuff we also saw diggers and big machinery.

Helping the Homeless

Helping In The Hard Times

How does a disaster effect a community? How do people help each other in these circumstances? We started our inquiry by touring around Christchurch City and seeing what has happened since the big earthquake 3 1/2 years ago.
We used photography to capture the things that stood out for us.

Rugby fun day

On the 5th of August the Year 7 8s  played in the rugby tournament.  It was dece! We went pretty well considering that we are a small school and we had some new people to rugby. We started the day well and the games were tough:

My dog Nala

My dog Nala is the biggest and best dog I've ever had. But there's also bad things about her:

1. She eats way too much.
2. She smashes holes in the wall with her tail that we call a bone whip
3. She slobbers way too much on the table and the bench.

More about her bone whip. It cracks such big holes in the wall and will make your bones feel pain for the next 2 days. Don’t get me wrong that thing is dangerous and since she’s really big it does a lot of damage.

Nala has really big muscles that control her arms to smash the windows. Nala is  also a bit  stupid because she goes into the kitchen and steals something but gets caught and then gets smacked by my Dad.

But she’s also a good dog sometimes. Like the time she won a  best dog award at a dog competition. Nala protects me from my older sister when she's mad and when my Dad’s mad. She barks at them loudly

Diary Writing

22 July 2014

Day 1

It was a nice and sunny day on the last day of school. When the last bell rang, my 4 friends and I jumped in the car and started driving to Picton. When we got to Picton we hopped out of the car and boarded the ferry to go to the North Island. When ten minutes passed we heard dolphins jumping about in the water. Then dark clouds started appearing in the sky so then we headed inside. There was rain and thunder, the waves started hitting the boat hard and the boat started rocking side to side. A man fell and knocked his head on the wall. We started hitting rocks so then we jumped in a life raft and sailed away from the ferry. An hour later we hit an island, it was abandoned but there was a lighthouse in the middle of it. If we made it there we would be safe in the shelter and could turn on the light on the lighthouse for a helicopter. When we arrived on the island Callum slipped on a rock and broke his ankle. To deal with it we made him a brace and crutches from the jenga blocks from the bag and branches off the island so then we continued on our journey

23 July 2014

Day 2

We were exploring the island and found a cliff. We put down our backpack to look over the cliff and the wind blew the backpack down to the bottom of the cliff. To get it back up there was a rock, tree and a flax bush. What we did was take lots of the flax and made a rope out of it. At one end of the rope we put the rock on the rope so then it could keep weighed down. At the other end we tied a branch to pick up the backpack. Our plan was a success and we got our backpack safely back up to us. After that we just continued on our journey. We found a flock of seagulls with a nest full of eggs. What we did was take the eggs and  kill some seagulls for the feathers and the meat then we continued exploring the island.

Day 3

After lots more exploring we finally reached the lighthouse. It had a hole in the top of it but atleast it still had shelter. Meanwhile, outside there was a big snowstorm and a helicopter was waiting to pick us up. The helicopter was only able to pick up 2 people so the other 2 people had to stay behind. It was hard to decide who was going to go home and who was going to stay on the island. So then we decided to let the oldest stay on the island and the youngest go in the helicopter. Lucy and I (the youngest ) went in the helicopter while Callum and Macca (the oldest) stayed behind. We didn’t know what they had to face but at least we were safe.
